SECRET PONCHOS IMPRESSIONS (HANDS ON)
Secret Ponchos is a western gunslinger stylized arena shooter coming to the PlayStation 4 from the developer Switchblade Monkeys. It was one of the 8 indie games featured during Sony’s E3 Conference earlier this year and it’s fantastic.
I don’t typically play arena shooters but the western motif and the crazy character design really drew my attention when I saw it was playable here at PAX Prime. So I gave it a shot and it was the surprise hit of the show for me.
The characters are varied each with different abilities and special attacks (they also each wield two different weapons). They also have different aiming reticles (long, wide, short, etc) which creates a deep level of learning when choosing your character for play.
One character in particular has a narrow field of aiming because he is a sharpshooting gunslinger with larger damaging shots however the sacrifice to that power is you have to be accurate in your shots to be effective.
This of course meant (especially for a game not in my comfort wheelhouse) I had some hard practicing to do in my short time with the game but it was addictive. That thrill of challenge I felt as a younger gamer playing a new video game was rekindled during my experience with Secret Ponchos and it’s staying with me until launch when I can get my hands on the final product.
